Health Care in America - They lost my grandfather!

Posted by Leigh on May 29, 2008

They found my Grandfather! He has been missing since Sunday when the local hospital had to have him transferred, by life flight, to Pittsburgh (1 1/2 hours away), because he needs to be on a ventilator. And the only person the local hospital has that can run one was in an accident and couldn’t make it to work.

Only one person in a whole hospital that can run a machine there? And a common machine at that. There are two state of the art assisted living and older folks homes within 3 miles of the hospital. Yet, they had to fly an 87 year old man, who has just had two surgeries in the past week, to the city because no one knew how to work the machine. That in itself is totally ridiculous!

Then he was supposed to come back to the local hospital Monday evening, but when my Aunt called in he hadn’t yet arrived. Tuesday morning she called the city hospital, he had been released. Call again to the local hospital, nope he hasn’t arrived. The local hospital never admitted they had him until last night. So from Monday night to Wednesday night, not a single family member knew where Grandpa was. What does this say about the state of health care here?

Then they (the family) found out that while he was in Pittsburgh, he hadn’t been hooked up to a ventilator at all! So what the hell was he transferred for?

Just like a Man…

It’s just like a man to try and argue with something that can’t be changed… lol…

Beta Mom.  Much better than Slacker Mom.  Or Beta Parents, I guess it would be.

But it fits my generation to a T.  We aren’t the stay at home mothers that most of our mothers are, we don’t fuss over the little things, like always sending home baked snacks and such.  But that doesn’t mean we’re bad moms.  It just means we’re more laid back!

My kids help out around the house, something I with my type A super mother, never had to do.  But it’s good for them, and me.  My kids will be prepared for life on their own, I wasn’t.  I was terribly unprepared for having my own place, dishes piled up, laundry was never done, it was a general disaster.  I didn’t know where to start.  I had never done a load of laundry, cooked a meal, or even knew what my mother spent all those hours cleaning.  Hopefully, my children won’t be in that predicament.  They know how the dishwasher works, and how to load and unload it, how to vacuum and even make their own beds.

My children are also able to fix themselves something to eat if I’m unavailable.  Take care of the animals, and all the other little household chores, like dusting and scrubbing the bathroom.

They enjoy the nights we do sit down meals with the whole family, but they also love the nights it’s take out in front of the television.  Instead of weekends spent scrubbing the whole house, we spent them out hiking with the dogs, or having campfires in the back yard.  Of course, the scrubbing does get done occasionally, Russell wouldn’t have it any other way!  But WHEN it gets done is another matter…

Are we bad parents because our kids are happy, healthy and loved?  Nope, we’re just Beta Parents!

Panic Attack

Posted by Leigh on

Sorry for my silence lately, but it was not by choice.  My best friend (my computer ;) ) decided over the weekend that he needed a break apparently, and I just got him off strike yesterday…  What a horrible weekend it was!

No, I’m not one of these people who panics because I don’t back-up, as I am very good about it.  I always have  all my important files backed up in triplicate…  Nor do I panic because I don’t have access to another computer, as we have four in the house and I could always use a different one, not to mention my cell phone/pda…

I panic whenever my computer goes down simply because I dislike change!  This computer is set up perfectly for me!  It takes months to get a computer up to par, and I hate to have to do it…  Plus, I’m just not ready to upgrade to Vista yet…  Still too many bugs.  So I’m trying to get at least another year out of my friend here.  He’s only three to begin with and I’m not yet ready to part ways…  So let’s keep our fingers crossed that he manages to hold on for at least a few more months!

So, I hope everyone (here in the states at least) had a great holiday weekend!

We did (except for the computer part), we took the kids and dogs up to the forest on Saturday for a 4 hour hike, up over the mountain to the indian springs.  Everyone had a wonderful time, and we were all happily tired when we got home (of course we had to stop for ice cream on the way home - it’s tradition!)

Sunday was spent working on the yard…  Russ takes great pride in keeping the yard nice and neat (well, as neat as can be with trees coming down and the side yard all tore up).

Monday we washed the vehicles and had a picnic down at my parents house… Always a good time…  The men spent most of the picnic tearing apart tractors and trying to get them to work…  They literally blew up our riding lawn mower (not that it was running anyway), a big piece blew out of the motor…  They think they can fix it…  (I consider the tractor a loss…  Oh well, we don’t have much grass this year anyway, and it’s only going to get worse…)  While the men played mechanic, the women played with the kids and hunted for bugs…  Fun, fun…  The night ended with a round of fireworks, and everyone dragging their cruddy kids home to try and get them clean once again…
