You wouldn’t think…

Posted by Leigh on October 24, 2008

You wouldn’t think that a utility company that only has just over one hundred customers would that that many accounts receivable…  But it’s actually gotten to the point where the board has decided to employ a debt collection agency to try and recover all the past due accounts.

We have actually had some people in the town living without water for over a year now, and it seems that they don’t much care.  Who can live like that?  Of course, most of the problem customers are renters, big surprise.

So it’s my job to go through all the debt collection agencies and try to find one who will work with us.  This is quite difficult for small businesses, as a few of the ones I’ve talked to won’t take you on as a client unless you have at least 150 past due accounts to hand over to them.  We don’t even have that many customers!

I’ve spent almost two hours this morning interviewing companies, or rather letting them interview me, as they always seem to ask more questions than I do!

But I think I’ve found the solution.  Let’s just hope the board agrees.

Remind me again why I work for the township?  Oh, that’s right.  It’s because I can’t say no to family members…  I’ve got to remember to work on that!

Monday Mornings

Posted by Leigh on October 20, 2008

[22]I would think, that being a work from home mom, that I would love Monday mornings.  This husband back to work, the kids back to school…  Finally the house is quiet.

But I don’t, I absolutely hate them.  On Saturday mornings, the kids help me do a thorough house cleaning, then we relax the rest of the weekend.  So come Monday morning, the house is a disaster area, there is a four page to do list laying on my desk of things that cropped up over the weekends, and I have no help.

One of my clients called this morning, he needs me to go set up his home network. I informed him that I sick and taking a few days off, not to mention the fact that I don’t work outside of my home on Saturdays. Duh?

Still not feeling better? He asked. (He’s called everyday since Wednesday trying to get me out there.) Nope. I’m still feeling crappy. Then he informed me that he has something that will make me feel better, and that he’ll have his wife drop it off on her way to work later.

I Miss This!

Posted by Leigh on

The last few days since I’ve been doped up on cold medicine, and haven’t worked much, has made me realize just how much I miss working on my own sites.  I get so busy with all my client work, ghost writing and listening to clients complain, that I never seem to have much time for my own stuff, the stuff I really enjoy working on.  I’ve posted more, commented more, and read more in the last few days than I usually have time for in a month.  Just me and my laptop curled up on the couch, wrapped up tight in my blankets.

I love being able to share my own thoughts and anecdotes with my friends and readers.  I love being able to do my own thing, without sticking to a very rigid schedule.  Without worrying about deadlines, or pleasing other people.  Without the stress that comes with self-employment.

I miss this - just being me!  So my goal for the next few months, is to lighten my work load and spend more time doing what I love to do!  We’ve all got to learn to take some time for ourselves, I think!  It keeps us from burning out so quick!
